Senior Project Manager, New Trains

West Coast Partnership

From December 2019, FirstGroup and Trenitalia will run services on the West Coast Mainline – connecting Scotland, the North-West of England, North Wales, the Midlands and London.

At the same time, we will provide a range of design, development and mobilisation services to support the delivery of the first phase of High Speed 2 (HS2).

We are creating a new Projects Directorate within the HQ team that will lead and oversee the major changes that will be implemented within the franchise. Within that directorate will be a new Fleet Projects Team, responsible for delivery of new trains and the refurbishment of existing trains.

About the job

The Senior Project Manager, New Trains will lead the team responsible for delivery of 23 new trains (13 bi-modes and 10 EMUs) into passenger service during 2022.

What you'll be doing

You'll have accountability for the success of the new trains project. You will also be an ambassador for the fleet projects across the West Coast Partnership organisation, ensuring that other functions remain engaged in the project and informed of the role they will play in ensuring its success.

You'll be directly involved in all phases of the project including contract management, design reviews, management of manufacturer against delivery plan, vehicle acceptance and service introduction.

Through innovation, develop and deliver robust systems and processes to increase productivity, reduce the cost of operations through time management and automate existing system/processes where applicable.

You will lead by example and use the WCP franchise vision and values to create a sense of direction for colleagues. In order to achieve success this role is expected to work in partnership with colleagues/managers from across the business.

Key accountabilities:

  • Manage all aspects of the new trains project which include planning and developing full scale project plans, key deliverables and work breakdown structures, through to implementation while identifying and managing:
    • Stakeholder and communication plans
    • Scope, Time, schedule, key milestones
    • Constraints - Safety Management
    • Budget (business cases for continued justification)
    • Risk, assumptions, issues and dependences (RAID)
  • Ensure the project is managed in accordance with business governance and project methodologies and all required stages are adhered to from initiation, planning, executing key deliverables, monitoring and controlling and closing
  • Produce planned/project progression reports for distribution to the programme/project Board
  • Undertake information gathering to support projects as directed by the Projects Director
  • Perform project assurance, quality reviews and change control when required
  • Provide guidance/support when required to support delivery of operational projects
  • Capture lessons learnt from other relevant projects (such as other fleet projects within First Trenitalia group companies) and implement learning within West Coast Partnership
  • Works closely with West Coast Partnership Fleet and Engineering Team, especially in relation to the handover of the new trains project on completion
  • Maintain a close working relationship with colleagues responsible for:
    • The Line Speed Project; and,
    • The Pendolino refurbishment project.
  • Represent WCP at cross industry forums and meetings, supporting closer integration between track and train and smoother implementation of fleet change projects

Leadership accountabilities:

  • Lead a project team to deliver the new trains project, ensuring it is adequately resourced with suitably skilled and experienced team members.
  • Be an ambassador for the WCP vision and values, and inspire others to do so too
  • Listen to and understand staff feedback and implement projects to improve business operations, and the working environment
  • Motivate, coach and support team members to maximise their performance, and potential

About you:

You'll be a seasoned fleet projects professional with a sound understanding of rolling stock fleets and maintenance depots. You'll have a track record of managing and delivering projects successfully from a train operator's perspective.

Qualifications and Memberships:

  • Chartered Engineer or equivalent qualification and/or engineering experience
  • Project management qualification such as APM PPQ or equivalent
  • Evidence of continued professional development

Job specific knowledge and skills:

  • Previous rolling stock project management experience
  • Technical understanding of traction and rolling stock, and its interfaces with railway infrastructure, operational staff and passengers.
  • Detailed knowledge of the rolling stock manufacturer, maintainer and owner industries
  • Knowledge of how to lead a major workstream in a large programme portfolio
  • Knowledge of the commercial, contractual, and legal frameworks affecting rail industry
  • Engineering risk assessment and change management
  • Numeric and budgetary control skills
  • Line management/matrix management
  • Excellent stakeholder management

To be based in London or Birmingham with regular travel throughout the West Coast network and to suppliers' sites in the UK and abroad.
