Rolling Stock Technician (7566)

The holder of this post is responsible for servicing, maintenance, repair and overhaul of traction units, components and equipment in accordance with South Western Railway specifications. You will adhere to depot protection, safety, quality and environmental procedures, rules and regulations in force.

  • Supervise and mentor assistants and apprentices and provide on the job training where required.
  • Undertake major faultfinding on units to identify faults and solutions, using schematic, main wiring as well as pneumatic diagrams.
  • Undertake routine electrical and mechanical maintenance of components and systems in accordance with the relevant exam schedule.
  • Using the correct equipment to undertake faultfinding tasks.
  • Complete environmental examinations against detailed specifications, detailing any issues found.
  • Undertake basic servicing e.g. brake pads, air filters, oil etc.
  • Carry out repairs or additional work arising from the examination (mechanical, electrical or vehicle building).
  • Carry out general cosmetic repairs in the carriages, such as changing, light fitting and door locks, in addition to repairing the body side of units.
  • Prepare units for service ensuring a clean and presentable environment.
  • Using appropriate paperwork/ IT record work carried out on relevant exam sheet and sign for on completion.
  • Compile formal reports detailing post incident / failure.
  • Obtain, use and care for and return all tools and equipment used.
  • Undertake depot protection responsibilities as required.
  • Advise Production Manager / Depot Coordinating Manager of any problems or defects identified and work arising from the issues.
  • Work effectively as part of a team, taking the lead when required.
  • Good written and oral communication skills, I.T skills are highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of safety systems including COSHH, Depot Protection etc.
  • At least 3 years experience of working in a rail environment, preferably with electric traction or a related industry.
  • Ability to lead and motivate a team.

Salary upto £46,000 per annum
