Head of Internal Communications

Purpose of role

Reporting to the HR Director, your role is to lead the transformation of the way we communicate internally to improve the way we inform and engage our employees across South Western Railways.

The Head of Internal Communications will lead and deliver an Internal Communications strategy that leverages cultural change, drives appropriate behaviours and underpins the company strategic priorities, vision and values, to help enable SWR to deliver a great experience for both its customers and employees.

Working closely with key stakeholders, you will lead in defining, communicating and embedding the SWR colleague experience to create an environment that supports the delivery of the company's strategic priorities and brings the values to life on a daily basis.

You will also ensure that all internal communication delivery deals with the scale and complexity associated with a geographically challenging and constantly changing workforce.

Your qualities mean that you are hands on and able to work confidently with Directors and Senior Leaders, and able to influence decision making at the highest level. You are as comfortable developing strategy as you are running internal briefing sessions and conferences


Key Accountabilities

  • To create, develop and deliver an Internal Communication strategy that engages and inspires colleagues across the business with the SWR story, supporting our colleagues in delivering for our customers.
  • Owning the internal brand, tone of voice, and internal communications guidelines, ensuring they are fit for purpose and that checks, and balances are in place to ensure those standards are met.
  • Develop a measurement framework that helps improve understanding of how we communicate throughout the business, our impact on colleagues and ensures a robust feedback loop to deliver consistent improvement
  • Engage and influence at Director level to make sure the value of effective communications is recognised, resourced, and consistently replicated throughout the business.
  • Develop and deliver high impact internal communications campaigns and to work with the Head of Engagement and Reward to drive engagement and support business performance.
  • Develop strong relationships with key stakeholders across the business, establishing a broad network of contacts to enable delivery of the internal communication strategy
  • Lead the development and delivery of creative and innovative internal communication plans.
  • Work in partnership with the business to maximise opportunities to keep colleagues informed. Engaging managers at all levels in the importance of communication.
  • Co-ordinate internal communications activities, ensuring that key messages are joined up and linking with projects and programmes where necessary
  • Deliver communications through the production of film and other media to enable the effective delivery of key messages. Ensure they are ‘on brand' and used appropriately.
  • Lead the planning and delivery of key events across the business including conferences, and internal meetings as required. Ensure key company and people messages are reflected at all times.
  • Provide support and advice as needed to colleagues within the communications team


Degree level qualification or equivalent experience

Job Specific Knowledge & Skills

  • Extensive and credible managerial experience with a proven track record of shaping and driving the delivery of an internal communications and engagement function and strategy within the transport industry or one with a similar scale of complexity.
  • Able to demonstrate operational knowledge of a broad range of communications channels and when they should be used to best effect.
  • First class verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Excellent written communications skills including the ability to draft high impact tailored communications and prepare briefings and articles.
  • Track record of delivering high quality decisions on time, to a demanding schedule.
  • Experience of leading through change and implementing effective IC&E strategies that drive the necessary change.
  • Evidence of displaying a business-delivery focused, can-do approach, showing energy, commitment and resilience
  • Experience in fostering mutually beneficial relationships with colleagues and balancing the competing interests of a number of stakeholders.
  • Effective interpersonal, management and communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate across all levels in the organisation.
  • Demonstrable experience of managing crisis communications and working to political pressure. 
  • Knowledge of how to identify and manage risk relating to internal communications and engagement.

Please note this role is based at South Bank Central or Overline House, Southampton
