Head of Engineering Safety (10093)

Job Description

As the Head of Engineering Safety, provide expert health and safety (HS) advice, assistance and support to all employees and contractors working within the Engineering team. Provide HS leadership to the Engineering team, acting as a figurehead to drive improvements in safety culture and performance whilst ensuring that compliance with the company SMS.



All locations, employees, and contractors within the Engineering function.

Accountability for managing the engineering safety budget within Delegated Authority limits.


Job Responsibilities

  • As the Head of Engineering Safety, provide expert advice, assistance and support to the Engineering team on health and safety (HS) requirements.
  • Ensure that the Engineering Safety Management System (SMS) is compliant with the requirements of the wider SWR SMS, that it is fit for purpose, and drives continuous improvement.
  • Gain compliance with ISO 45001 for the full scope of the Engineering team activities.
  • Lead the development of processes that enable safety, and occupational health risks to be identified and mitigated – including those associated with organisational and operational change.
  • Lead the monitoring and safety audit processes to support SWR in complying with contractual, legal safety and sustainability requirements is delivered through safety team members
  • Support the SWR Head of Safety in the delivery of an integrated safety risk management systems and provide guidance on the process
  • Ensure that there are effective processes for the recording, reporting and investigation of accidents and incidents in order to develop a culture where lessons are learned and drive risk reduction.
  • Ensure that there is a robust emergency planning processes in place.
  • Provide leadership and motivation to the Engineering teams in order to ensure objectives are monitored and achieved.
  • Maintain theoretical and practical competence in the field of HS management, including the application of relevant legislation and industry requirements.


Decision Making

The post holder is expected to make decisions relating to the day-to-day application of safety arrangements and implement improvements where appropriate. For fundamental changes to safety arrangements or the strategic safety direction, the post holder would make a recommendation to, and seek authority from, the SWR Head of Safety before implementation.


Specific Qualifications and Knowledge

  • Formal safety management qualification (NEBOSH diploma) with membership of the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) or equivalent professional qualification.
  • Significant experience in an HS management role, preferably with three years experience of such a role in the UK Railway Industry.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to influence both senior decision makers and the behaviour of front-line employees.
  • Ability to work on own initiative, self-motivated and able to set and achieve demanding targets and objectives.
  • Experience of working in an engineering environment with associated familiarity of the hazards.

This role will be undertake some out of hours and weekends as required. 

This role will be located in London but can be engineering depot based when needed.
