Environment Manager

Main Purpose

The purpose of this role is to deliver SWR's Sustainable Development strategy to deliver improvements across a range of socio-economic and environmental indicators.

You will also be SWR's main environmental management lead responsible for delivery of SWR's environmental commitments.

Principal Accountabilities

The role will be responsible for achieving the SWR Franchise Agreement Committed Obligation of achieving ISO14001 certification across the entire scope of the SWR operations within 18 months of the Franchise Start date.

Work with the certification body to develop a certification project plan for ISO14001

Produce a detailed internal project plan for delivery of ISO14001

Undertake a gap analysis of current environmental management arrangements against the requirements of the relevant standards

Develop compliant environmental policies

Create procedures and processes to ensure compliance with the ISO14001 standard

Ensure training plans are in place that enable compliance with the ISO14001 stan

Create and carry out internal Environmental Management System audits prior to certification

Work with teams to close any Environmental Management System non-conformities

Schedule and accompany auditors on ISO14001 certification audits

Provide content for internal communications in progress in obtaining the ISO14001 certification

Work to align the approach with best practice from FirstGroup and its Train Operating Companies

Responsible for delivery of elements of the Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS) and coordinating delivery of associated plans

Monitoring progress in delivering the SDS using the RSSB Sustainable Development Self-Assessment framework

Working with SWR's Procurement team to deliver a BS8903/ISO20400 approach to sustainable procurement

Attending, and in some cases chairing, SWR meetings for sustainable development and environmental management

Attend Industry events on sustainable development

In some cases, delivering sustainable development and environmental management training and awareness events

Coordinating the SWR Green Week

Supporting delivery of the environmental commitments and targets outlined in the SWR Franchise Agreement by working across each business function

Produce periodic sustainability and environmental performance reports and to ensure compliance with the SWR Franchise Agreement reporting requirements

Review and provide input for new infrastructure projects (BREEAM/CEEQUAL/GRIP Stage reviews, FG Sustainability Assessment)

Work with stakeholders to resolve environmental complaints

Managing the environmental assurance process including auditing environmental systems to ensure compliance with legal and other requirements

Work with the Energy Manager in delivery of energy efficiency initiatives

Deputise for the Head of Sustainability as and when required

Undertake any task that is reasonably requested by the Head of Sustainability

Minimum Requirements

BA/BSc in Environmental Management/Studies or other relevant degree

Associate member IEMA or other related professional body

Experience of ISO14001 Environmental Management Systems

Experience of internal auditing

Experienced in environmental reporting

Ability to deliver multiple projects

Creation of training and briefing material

Working with stakeholders on improvement plans

Working with multiple teams

Experience of UK Rail Industry

Excellent communicator and team player
