Senior Business Partner

Purpose of role

The Senior Business Partner is a key point of contact between the Group Finance team and the individual Train Operating Companies (TOCs), and is responsible for is ensuring that the performance of the TOCs is well understood by the Rail Management team, identifying all issues and opportunities for improvement, ensuring that robust and reliable forecasts and budgets are in place for the Rail Division, and delivering excellent information and insight on these entities to both the Rail Management team and the Group Finance team.

Key accountabilities

  • A critical and objective partner to multiple TOCs
  • Drives insight and commercial challenge into the performance of the business, challenging and holding the business accountable for its performance and management of risk exposure for operational areas or programmes
  • Provides interpretation and guidance in relation to financial analysis, consolidated budgets and forecasts to enable business areas to make key decisions and achieve targets and mitigate risks
  • Maximises financial and business performance (including efficiencies delivery) through high quality analysis of financial plans, management information and performance data
  • Provides senior leadership and business partnership working with the directors of the operations or project organisations
  • Defines and implements best practice planning and control techniques in line with business needs, working closely with the TOC finance teams
  • Leads continuous improvement, including projects to raise quality in standards, systems and people, including benchmarking where appropriate.

Qualifications and memberships

  • Educated to degree standard or equivalent
  • Qualified accountant (i.e. CIMA/ ACA /ACCA) or equivalent

  • Commercial acumen

Relevant experience

  • Experience in providing insight and analysis to finance and non-finance colleagues
  • Proven track record of providing value add insight and recommendations
  • Experience within Rail would be useful but is not essential
  • Head office / group finance experience would be advantageous but is also not essential
