Train Service Controller

About the team:

This position sits as part of the Train Service Delivery team, working in the Control Centre in Swindon. You will be part of a team of 6 Train Service Controllers working either the West, LTV, or HSS desk. There are 18 Train Service Controllers in total.

About the job:

The purpose of a Train Service Controller is to make best use of available resources to deliver the advertised train service to the public, including during disruption.

Your main responsibilities will be:

Being the focal point on shift for the delivery of the Train Service, working with other colleagues in order to do so successfully, such as Crew Resources, Fleet, Customer Information teams within the Control, and AOMs, stations, depots etc outside the Control.

Making decisions to maximise PPM, minimise cancellations etc whilst keeping focus on the needs of the customer.

Sensitive allocations of train sets to diagrams in order to minimise short-formations and maximise the delivery of seats to plan.

Usage of various IT applications in order to make informed and accurate decisions, within the safe operating limits of the various fleets, such as fuel constraints, exam requirements etc.

Keeping the fleet allocation database on Integrale up-to-date.

Making log entries where required using CCIL

You'll need to be:

Able to make tough decisions, whilst taking into account the needs of the customer.

Used to working within a regulated environment with regards to safety and railway operations.

Used to working with a variety of IT applications.

Experienced with communicating with staff from all parts of the railway industry.

Used to shift work and willing to be flexible in order to ensure all shifts are covered within the Control.

As a minimum you'll need to have:

Excellent geographical knowledge of all of the railway that GWR operate over.

Excellent knowledge of the GWR timetable and service patterns.

2 years of railway operational experience, ideally with some in a Control environment, and also some in a customer-based environment.

Experience of working with numerous IT applications, including Integrale.

Awareness of the various train service performance targets that GWR need to meet.

About the location:

Western House is located in Swindon and is an approximate 2-3 minute walk from Swindon railway and bus stations. There is an on-site canteen, providing hot and cold food through the morning and lunchtime.

Working Pattern:

This job works as part of a 6-person team, working shifts on a 24/7 basis including nights and weekends. There is also rostered bank holiday working.

There is 2 positions, 1 Perm and 1 12 months secondment
