Senior Payroll Advisor (9004)

About the team

The payroll team are responsible for the production of weekly and four weekly payroll for GWR, TPE, Hull and FRH, circa 8,000 colleagues. The team are responsible for the interfaces into the payroll system, the processing of all payroll related data and providing management and colleagues with payroll related reports and information.

 

About the job

This position assists the payroll management team in the end to end running of the weekly payroll processes, it will be responsible for key inputs and controls within the payroll systems and will focus particularly on the TPE and Hull payrolls while supporting all elements of the GWR payroll.  The role will include pension and taxation tasks and will also focus on system developments across the whole department.  The role has line management responsibility for a team of 4.

 

What you'll be doing

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Management, control and development of payroll data and associated payroll processes to ensure critical objectives are achieved, robust processes and controls are maintained.
  • To develop, improve and manage external systems that interface into the payroll system, ensuring data is transmitted into Cyborg in the most efficient and controlled manner.
  • Continually reviewing the internal controls associated with the payroll systems.
  • Responsible for the accurate, timely and controlled input of the systems into the Cyborg payroll system for all weekly and periodic payrolls.
  • Assisting in the submission of all payroll data to HMRC, RPMI and third parties to ensure deadlines and reporting requirements are met and compliance to standards maintained.
  • Ensuring compliance to the GWR delegated authority matrix.
  • Comply with Group's control procedures, ensuring that all standards and processes are followed and documented.
  • Safeguard the financial and non-financial data present within the payroll office ensuring data is secure and compliance is achieved against internal and external standards.
  • Working with First Group to respond to external payroll reporting requirements.
  • Training and management of the payroll team alongside payroll management team.
  • Working closely with HR to develop and where required implement the company's HR systems ensuring data is accurate and consistent across payroll and HR.
  • Supporting the team in improving the systems and processes in place across the team.
  • Provide the businesses with operational and management information to support the management and objectives of the business.

 

About you

You'll need to be:

  • Experience dealing with multiple different T&C's across different organisations.
  • Qualified Payroll practitioner or equivalent with experience working in a large payroll office.
  • Up to date on recent changes in payroll and tax laws impacting large organisations.
  • Knowledgeable on payroll, tax, NI, pension and statutory requirements as well as defined contribution and defined benefit pension schemes.
  • Flexibility to travel across GWR network when required and work flexible hours as and when required.
  • Professional, confident and act with a high level of integrity.

 

As a minimum you'll need to have:

  • Strong Excel experience and data analysis skills
  • Experience in system development and implementation of system improvements.
  • Ability to implement process improvements and review existing controls and improve
  • Strong system skills, including excel, word and ideally Cyborg payroll and Cognos reporting
  • Strong communication skills, dealing both with financial and non-financial teams

About the location:

The role is based in Bristol Temple Meads station and is office based.  Travel will be required to visit other group companies, suppliers and locations across GWR.

 

Working Pattern:

The role is 37 hours per week based around core office working hours, no shift working is required but flexibility is required.
