Gateline Assistant

About the team

The role is Gateline Assistant where you are the first person and the last that our customers meet and can be a very busy environment.  The Gateline also collects revenue from customers without tickets.  The work is sometimes stressful but it can be a very rewarding job.

The purpose of the job is to be the face of Great Western Trains and to give our customers a positive impression of the company and to exceed their expectations of customer service

What you'll be doing

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Providing excellent customer service to our customers using our station.
  • Responsible for the safe and timely operation of the automatic ticket barriers.
  • Full range of retail activities ensuring compliance in ticket sales & vaildity.
  • Providing assistance and information to customers as required
  • Ensuring station presentation is maintained to a high standard

About you

You'll need to be:

    • Able to provide excellent customer service and remain calm particularly during times of service disruption.
    • Respond, record and react to safety issues that may compromise customer safety
    • Competent in all aspect of gateline activities
    • Competent in all retail activities including cash handling
    • Ability to manage customers requiring assistance
    • Pro-actively communicate and liaise with customers, colleagues and other business partners


As a minimum you'll need to have:

  • Previous experience of establishing relationships with customers.
  • Able to meet the required medical standards for this role.
  • Previous experience in shift working including Sundays and Bank Holidays
  • Able to maintain concentration and awareness of customer behaviours

About the location:

Exeter St Davids is a very busy station and the manages up to 4 million customers a year

Working Pattern:

This role involves working shift working, including weekends and bank holidays.  The earliest start 05.45 and latest finish would be 23.00
