Financial Controller

About the team:

A key member of the finance leadership team, reporting to the finance director, leading a team of c45.

About the job:

This position leads the GWR Financial Control team, which includes Financial Accounting, Retail and Catering accounting and the Payroll function. The team are responsible for the integrity and accuracy of financial data within GWR, including ownership of the balance sheet and cashflow, and ensuring all relevant FirstGroup reporting and statutory requirements are met.

The role is based in central Swindon and has management responsibility. This role should maintain and improve financial controls within GWR, while driving forward system and process improvements and ensuring controls are in place to safeguard GWR's assets, and ensure liabilities are settled in an effective manner.

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Manage the day-to-day running of the operational finance function.
  • Management, control and development of finance systems to ensure time critical objectives are achieved, robust processes and controls are maintained and reviewed.
  • Ensuring controls are in place to safeguard GWR's assets and to ensure liabilities are settled in a time efficient and effective manner, with cashflow managed optimally.
  • Review and optimise processes to ensure they are efficient and utilising modern technology, and compliant with FirstGroup policies and procedures.
  • Submission, with Group support, of all external reporting data to HMRC, Companies House, RPMI and other third parties to ensure all deadlines are met.
  • Internal financial reporting to FirstGroup rail division and group finance
  • Ensuring compliance to the GWR delegated authority matrix ensuring all transactions are appropriately authorised and that processes are documented, controlled and evidenced.
  • Comply with Group's control procedures, ensuring that all standards and processes are followed and documented.
  • Safeguard the financial and non-financial data across GWR, ensuring data is secure and compliance is achieved against internal and external standards.
  • Support the Finance Director, other members of the Exec and finance teams as required

You'll need to be:

    • Qualified, ACA, ACCA or CIMA
    • Have excellent technical skills including reporting
    • Number of years' experience leading teams in a large scale business environment, including payroll
    • Strong system experience including excel, SAP and data analysis skills
    • Strong communication skills, dealing both with financial and non-financial team
    • Experience of managing and improving financial control
    • Experience of managing change and process improvements

As a minimum you'll need to have:

  • Knowledge of best practice control procedures and managing delegated authority principle. Also changes in IFRS accounting, payroll and tax laws impacting large organisations.
  • Ability to implement process improvements and review existing controls and enhance
  • Cash and working capital management experience
  • Ability to solve problems and anticipate issues
  • Team management experience

About the location:

You will be based in our Head office in Swindon, but must be flexible to travel across GWR Network when required and work flexible hours as and when required. The payroll team are based in Bristol.

Additional Information:

This role is maternity cover for up to 15th months
