About the team

This role sits within the Operations Directorate and the Head of Operations Department is responsible for developing and maintaining the competence requirements of our operational staff against a robust suite of operational procedures. Plus being at the forefront of the safety validation for the many changes happening to the GWR infrastructure and trains. The teams aim is to strive for continual improvement through development of staff and processes.


About the job

To lead and assess Driver Standards Manager teams to ensure the highest level of job performance, by providing learning, coaching and mentoring to colleagues within your designated team to facilitate their Continual Professional Development (CPD).


What you'll be doing

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Developing Driver Standards Managers on competence standards to deliver a robust competence management system
  • Liaising with, and supporting Driver Depot Managers and their teams in delivering the competence requirements
  • Develop and supply subject matter expertise relating to traction types operated within the business
  • Supporting and mentoring candidates to the Driver Standards Manager role
  • Monitor and audit the effectiveness of and adherence to operational standards
  • Undertake investigations in areas of subject matter expertness
  • Undertake IQA across all GWR traincrew depots


About you

You'll need to be:


  • 3 years' train driving experience and 1 years' experience in an operational managers' role
  • Hold an assessor qualification of 6317 or equivalent
  • Competence in rules and regulations with an excellent knowledge of industry standards and experience of developing standards and procedures
  • Current competence in train driving
  • An Internal Quality Assurance (Verifier) qualification would be advantageous but training can be provided for the right candidate
  • Experience of incident investigations, excellent IT and management skills


As a minimum you'll need to have:

  • Independent and able to work alone but with a view to furthering the activities of the wider team
  • Proactive in maintaining your competency as a driver and achieving compliance with company standards
  • Prepared to work to tight deadlines and have a determination to succeed
  • Must be self-motivated, committed to delivering quality results with minimum supervision and able to use your initiative appropriately
  • Have the ability to work methodically and create /maintain accurate records is also essential

About the location:

The positions will be based at Bristol Temple Meads for the central region and Paddington for the east region.  Both locations are situated on the main station


Working Pattern:

The role will predominately office based hours however some out of hours/weekend working is expected to enable a broad depth of assessment and verification.


Additional Information:

Flexibility is required to travel across the GWR network, including ad-hoc lodgings where necessary.  There is a second line operations on-call requirement which may include weekend working.
