Commercial Insights Analyst

About the team:

The Revenue Management team has a varied role divided into three main areas, which work closely together:-

  • Fares – Working on pricing strategy and the implementation of pricing policy within the business and in conjunction with other operators.
  • Route Management and Reservations – Managing the business's yield strategy, controlling ticket quotas for advance purchase tickets, and managing the seat reservations systems.
  • Commercial Insights – Tracking and analysing ticket sales data, providing revenue and demand  forecasts, managing revenue allocations between operators, and providing analytical support on customer and income numbers to functions across the business.

About the job:

The vacancy is within the Commercial Insights and Analysis team.

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Working within a team of experienced analysts with responsibilities spanning across: -
  • Revenue and demand forecasting to set GWR's revenue budget and forecasts, as well as predicting the impact of commercial projects and service changes.
  • Tracking and reporting on GWR's revenue performance and conducting analysis to explain variances to forecast.
  • Evaluating the impact of service amendments, timetable changes and investment schemes on customer revenue and customer volumes.
  • Measuring return on investment for GWR marketing and sales campaigns.
  • Ensuring GWR receives its' correct revenue through the industry systems and liaising with other train operating companies to resolve allocation issues.
  • Drawing insights from and manipulating large and complex data sets.
  • Identifying and leading analytical initiatives that will bring value to stakeholders across the network. Over time we would be looking to you to take ownership of specific work streams and represent the Revenue Management team in both internal meetings with other departments and externally in cross industry forums.
  • You'll need to be:
  • To achieve this, we work with extensive data from a wide and expanding range of industry and non-industry sources, utilising bespoke Industry systems, as well as more generally used tools such as SAP and Tableau.
  • Able to work to deadlines
  • Be able to provide actionable insights across a variety of business situations, and be comfortable in dealing with and presenting the outputs to stakeholders
  • Able to use data to tell a story, make recommendations and help provide solutions to business issues
  • Able to use insights to plan and forecast future revenue performance

As a minimum you'll need to have:

  • A strong commercial acumen
  • Excellent analytical and numerical skills
  • A degree or equivalent
  • Advanced working knowledge and application of MS Office and particularly Excel
  • An understanding of the UK rail industry is desirable but not essential, as is knowledge of industry specific tools such as MOIRA, LENNON and the Passenger Demand Forecasting Handbook
  • Experience of business intelligence software and working with large data sets would also be advantageous but not essential.

About the location:

The role is based in Capital House, Edgware Road, about 6 minutes' walk from Paddington Station and next door to Edgware Road Underground Station.

Working Pattern:

This is an office-based role with normal Monday to Friday core hours, however working practices are under review given the experience of the last 12 months and a degree of flexibility around home working and/or working from other GWR offices can be discussed.
