Project Manager - Commercial Projects (8608)


The First Bus Project Team have an opportunity for a Project Manager – Commercial Projects to join them in Leeds.

The role is required to manage projects being rolled out within the Commercial Division and will need to ensure that the same governance is applied across all projects and that the management and delivery of projects is aligned with the rest of the projects within the PMO in London, but will work in the same office as the Commercial team in Leeds

This is a permanent appointment reporting to the Programme Director and the ideal candidate should be able to start soon or have a short notice period

The Role

The Project Manager will have overall responsibility for the successful initiation, planning, design, execution, monitoring, controlling, and closure of Commercial projects within First Bus

The primary responsibility would be managing projects within the Commercial team (website and App development, digital travel passes and PCI-DSS compliance as initial priorities), but the role would not necessarily be limited to these and the Project Manager must have a combination of skills to generally manage multiple projects and workstreams, the ability to build relationships with stakeholders at all levels and in all divisions, understand needs, issues and risks, as well as have experience and confidence to drive projects forward to completion

Main Duties

  • Confirm scope and success criteria for projects and constituent work streams with the project sponsors and governing boards
  • Develop and manage project plans, associated governance, processes, procedures and tools to maximise delivery of the projects
  • Effectively manage projects and suppliers within the Information Technology sector through strong technical understanding and insight into development requirements
  • Engage stakeholders to provide feedback on plans, priorities and delivery
  • Ensure that projects are executed in accordance with specified budgets, schedules and performance criteria – with an emphasis on building efficiency and sustainable business change
  • Develop and maintain communications plans to share progress and change with stakeholders in division and operating company roles
  • Lead specific work streams and deliver practical activities required to maintain progress to plan (for example; gathering requirements, managing supplier relationship, drafting reports, etc.)
  • Complete all regular project documentation including presentations, monthly board reports, weekly project trackers, project plans, finance trackers and any additional documentation to support the delivery
  • Deliver regular progress reports to Project Board, Executive Sponsors and PMO, including and raising relevant risks and issues
  • Act as lead point of contact for all issues relating to the project


Skills and Experience Required

  • Experience managing website and App development projects
  • Significant technical knowledge gained whilst working in the Information Technology sector
  • Experience in the customer service environment would be beneficial
  • Relevant experience in the successful management of complex business change programs
  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to manage complex inter-dependent activities in a busy business-as-usual environment
  • Proven experience to deliver on multiple strategic priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience of applying various project management methodologies and processes
  • Stakeholder engagement at all levels, ability to overcome challenges and resistance to change and to achieve momentum despite competing priorities
  • Flexible approach with the capability to identify and manage opportunities and risk
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) skills and effective at influencing, negotiation and conflict management at all levels
  • Confident speaker with the ability to manage meetings and communicate with internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent attention to detail and analytical ability
  • Business report writing skills and preparation of presentations
  • Commercial and financial awareness and experience
  • Experience in passenger transport, the bus sector in particular, would be advantageous but is not essential
  • Preferably educated to a tertiary level and in possession of a Project Management qualification
  • Computer literate with competence in the full MS Office suite, including MS Project
  • Able to travel in support of project and business support requirements
