Rail Engineering Management Graduate

Rail Engineering Management Graduate Programme

On this 2-year programme you'll get to grips with real-life projects, learning on the job via a variety of activities and experiences. You'll be provided with the funding, mentorship and support needed to become a Chartered Engineer and potentially a future leader within our business.

Which rail companies could I work in?

FirstGroup is one of the UK's most experienced rail operators running every type of service from long distance, regional, commuter and sleeper services, anywhere between Cornwall and Scotland. We currently operate three franchises in which we place graduates – Great Western Railway, TransPennine Express and South Western Railway, as well as the open access passenger rail service – Hull Trains. Last year our rail services transported 345 million passengers from over 400 stations. Across all operations, we are working with industry partners and local stakeholders to provide easy and convenient mobility, improving quality of life by connecting people and communities.

What does the programme involve?

Given the challenges involved in Rail Engineering, you'll need plenty of drive and ambition to succeed as you embark on a fast-moving learning journey.

Your ability to build solid relationships and collaborate with your colleagues at every level will be key. Ours is a fast-moving operation in more ways than one, so you'll also be able to think on your feet and devise innovative solutions to any challenges. It's about being creative, looking at things from a new angle, finding ways to do things differently, yet effectively and being resilient to obstacles and set-backs that come your way. Whilst always, always putting the safety of yourself, our passengers and our people first.

You'll get stuck in from day one and over the two years you'll get fully involved in:

  • Inspections, servicing diagnosis and repairs
  • Learning about depot engineering management in a variety of roles
  • Technical solutions and engineering design projects
  • An industry placement
  • Understanding how the business operates
  • UK Engineering Performance and project & contract management.

Who are you looking for and what qualifications do I need?

To get started you'll have at least a 2:2 BEng or an MEng accredited by the IMechE or IET.

You'll be mentored at every stage and we will work with you to ensure you realise your full potential. We're looking for ambitious graduates who have their sights set on a management role and Chartered Engineer status. You'll have a real willingness to keep on learning from others plus the determination to drive your own development too.  You should also feel confident and comfortable working in a demanding commercial environment and strongly believe in the organisation's goals and values; the customer should be at the heart of everything you do.

Where will I be located?

Joining one of our Train Operating Companies, you'll be working in various rail depots, and will need the flexibility to move around over the course of the programme. You'll also spend time on placements with suppliers away from home.

What will I receive in return?

We offer a competitive salary, travel benefits, pension scheme, buy as you earn and save as you earn share schemes as well as discount and cash back programmes with high street and online retailers. As an Engineer, you will also have the chance to achieve your Chartered status.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity in our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

How will I be selected?

Successful applicants will undergo a 5-stage selection process. Once you have applied, we will invite you to complete some online tests. If you get through these, you'll be asked to undertake a video interview. This may then result in you being invited to an assessment centre, which, if you pass, will lead to an offer for a place on the next graduate programme starting in September 2020.

Applications must be received by the 1st January 2020.
