Finance Analyst

Purpose of role

The Finance Analyst is a key point of contact between the Group Finance team and the individual train operating companies (TOCs), and is responsible for ensuring that the performance of the TOCs that they support is well understood by the management team, highlighting any issues and opportunities for improvement, and ensuring that the reporting being delivered by the TOCs is in line with the requirements of both the Rail Management team and the Group Finance team.

Key accountabilities

  • Collate and aggregate management accounting and financial accounting outputs for income and expenditure, KPIs, milestones, cash flows and balance sheets, Business Plan, and other financial/performance outputs
  • Produce the weekly trading report and monthly financial book for the Rail division
  • Highlight key variances and trends ensuring these are fully documented, enabling effective mitigation actions to be identified by the local finance teams
  • Ensure the planning and reporting timetables and management reporting templates reflect the required business planning and reporting outputs and enables effective monitoring of delivery against timetables
  • Collect and analyse financial information to support decision making; identify and monitor underlying drivers of cost variances between actual expenditure vs. forecast, raising issues with managers/business when appropriate
  • Highlight to the business any risk exposure for operational areas / projects or programme levels
  • Support and delivers continuous improvement opportunities, actively seeking to continually improve and develop all aspects of finance services

Qualifications and memberships

  • Educated to degree standard or equivalent
  • Qualified accountant (i.e. CIMA/ ACA /ACCA) or equivalent

Relevant experience

  • Experience in providing reporting and analysis to finance and non-finance colleagues
  • Experience within Rail would be useful but is not essential
  • Head office / group finance experience would be advantageous but is also not essential
