Are you a penultimate year undergraduate student looking to put your skills to the test and earn an income over the summer? Then join one of our summer internships and enjoy rolling your sleeves up and getting stuck into new challenges and all kinds of real-life projects.

Here, you’ll gain hands-on experience, enhance your CV and learn quickly on the job with our team of experts. If you’re a great communicator, thrive on a challenge and with lots of ideas, you could earn a salary and gain a real insight into our fast-moving business. This could be a summer you’ll never forget!

First Bus - Operations

12-week internship
UK North Division

  • Join our team in the North at a main site close to your home.
  • Help one of our depots or operational teams to continually improve performance and achieve operational excellence.
  • Work alongside Operational Managers and Directors and be mentored by our Director of Operational Improvement.
  • Share best practice and introduce standard operational processes as you help to implement a model that will enable us to achieve Gold standard.

First Bus – Engineering

12-week internship
Leeds

  • Work with local Engineering Managers to drive efficiencies and ensure best practice.
  • Help to continually improve customer service and engineering safety and performance.
  • Develop work-streams and implement an innovative programme that will help to achieve Gold standard across 14 engineering criteria.
  • Support and report to our Engineering Director or one of our Fleet Engineers.

First Bus – Finance

8-12 week internship
Bristol

  • Enjoy plenty of variety and gain a real insight into our different finance teams - Financial Planning & Analysis, Decision Support, Financial Accounting and Data & Analytics.
  • Support the day-to-day operations of our finance teams from budgeting and forecasting to analysis and reconciliations.
  • Get involved with all kinds of finance projects such as the implementation of new IT systems.

Great Western Railway – Marketing

12-week internship
London, Paddington

  • Work with our Campaign Manager to develop the GWR content strategy and deliver a variety of innovative campaigns.
  • Gain wide-ranging marketing experience, supporting lots of different projects.
  • Be part of a creative campaign team that drives revenue generation and customer acquisition.
  • Develop your skills and understanding of marketing techniques while collaborating with marketing agencies and our different sales and marketing teams.

Great Western Railway – Marketing

12-week internship
London, Paddington

  • Support our CRM Manager with a wide range of day-to-day campaigns and activities.
  • Gain a real insight into marketing and the impact brand awareness has on driving revenue and business performance.
  • Develop your marketing skills and knowledge of marketing techniques working with agencies and our sales and marketing teams.
  • Work across our business, analysing campaign results and performance, as part of a CRM team that drives customer retention and increases lifetime value.

Who we are looking for:

We are looking for penultimate year students either in a 3 or 4 year degree.

Your ability to build solid relationships and collaborate with your colleagues at every level will be key. Ours is a fast-moving operation in more ways than one, so you’ll also be able to think on your feet and devise innovative solutions to any challenges that come your way. It’s about being creative, looking at things from a new angle, finding ways to do things differently, yet effectively and being resilient to obstacles and set-backs that come your way. Whilst always, always putting the safety of our passengers and our people first.

You should feel comfortable working in a demanding commercial environment and strongly believe in the organisations goals and values, the customer should be at the heart of everything you do.

How will I be selected?

2018 internship application process

  1. Applications
    Apply here between 21st March to 20th April.
  2. Online tests
    Complete our verbal, logical and numerical reasoning tests. No later than 24th April.
  3. Video interviews
    You’ll be invited to complete these as soon as possible. No later than 30th April.
  4. Assessment centre
    Our assessments will run on 14th & 15th May. We’ll let you know which day you should attend by 5th May.
  5. Verbal offers
    Will be made 18th May, for an 11th June start.

Is there a salary?

We’ll reward your hard work and commitment with a competitive intern salary, pro rata.

What happens after the internship?

If you love the experience, we would like you to apply to one of our graduate programmes or to any direct entry roles. If you do a great job and impress us, you may be invited straight to the assessment for one of our graduate places the following year.
