Graduate Development Programme

Your development - owned by you, supported by us

Our approach to your engagement and development is to give you opportunities to learn from real experience, from your colleagues, from each other and ‘in the classroom’. That is why we base your development on what is known in HR as the 70-20-10 learning model. On your programme, you will undertake a series of opportunities aligned to giving you breadth and depth to what you will learn and how you will grow.

On our programme, you’ll be actively encouraged to take the lead for your own development, giving you greater ownership of your career at FirstGroup. We want to enable you to drive your own learning the way you want to. And we’ll make our expectations clear from the moment we offer you a place.

Learning on-the-job (70%)

We want to give you every opportunity to learn about our business by working in our business. As this is the most beneficial and influential way to develop your skills, we’ll work with our colleagues across Bus, Rail, Finance, Commercial and CSR to provide placements, projects and experiences to meet your specific needs and our business priorities. Here, you’ll gain a unique blend of knowledge, skills, stretch and insight – learning that will stand you in good stead, whatever role you take up once you have completed the programme.

Feedback and coaching (20%)

We know how vital insight and self-awareness are for your growth and ongoing development. So, our specific activities will enable you to build a picture of your strengths and capabilities through feedback and coaching and self-reflection. You are encouraged to get feedback from your sponsor, mentor, line manager, project sponsors and peers which will all help you to build on your strengths and identify areas for development, enabling you to become an all-round great performer.

Formal training (10%)

To make sure you know what to do in key situations and how to do it, we’ll provide you with all kinds of training that will help you develop your skills and gain vital knowledge. Our modules will meet your changing development needs, from learning how to manage your responsibilities and write reports to improving your negotiation, influencing and presentation skills. You will attend a range of courses delivered internally and externally to aid your development and equip you with the skills needed to perform in a variety of different roles.

Personal Development Plan (PDP)

Your tailored PDP will be at the heart of your development. It’s a dynamic document that will travel with you throughout the programme. It is constantly reviewed and updated to enable you and us to decide where to take your learning next.

Beyond your graduate programme

Once you’ve successfully completed the programme, you’ll be supported to find your first permanent role in the business. As you transition into this role you will be encouraged to continue to make the most of your Mentor to maximise the benefits of the relationship you have developed during your graduate programme. Whichever role you follow into, your development won’t end with your programme. We provide everybody here with a diverse range of training opportunities and access to workplace learning. By doing so we are able to maximise the impact our employees can have on the business as well as enable you to maximise your career with us at FirstGroup.
